when should we start to prepare for a college essay?

It's always good to start early.

But I'd say that the ideal time would be around your junior year and your junior/senior summer.

know which colleges you are going to apply to. Many times u can write one essay that fits the essay topics in many different applications. This will save you alot of time when it comes to the last few weeks.
